Brush Management (Juniper) Plateau offers selective and ecologically sound Brush Management which maintains the integrity of the habitat for native wildlife, while enhancing the beauty of your property. Our skilled field technicians implement Brush Management techniques that are tailored to the habitat needs of your property. The various forms of Juniper Brush Management include: high intensity (dense) selective clearing, re-growth juniper control, and mechanical removal with cedar-shears.
Slash Management Have you considered what to do with the downed brush or slash after performing Brush Management? Based on the method implemented, slash can be used for Erosion Control (dams/berms) and Supplemental Shelter (brush piles) activities. Slash can also be chipped and used as mulch in reseeding and planting projects, as well as a base for trail building. Plateau can assist you with effective Slash Management
Chemical Brush Treatment Plateau can control encroaching native species with the appropriate herbicides and spraying techniques. Prickly pear cactus, mesquite, yaupon huisache, and willow baccharis are common examples of species requiring chemical treatments.
Range Enhancement (Reseeding) To help improve the diversity and volume of beneficial food sources for songbirds, quail, dove, turkey, and many other native species, Plateau reseeds the appropriate designated areas with quality seed for native grasses and flowering plants based on landowner goals and your Wildlife Management Plan.
Prescribed Control of Animal Species Selectively removing animals such as feral hogs, White-tailed deer, or exotic ungulates (such as non-native deer and other non-native animals) is a great benefit to the overall health of your land. Plateau can provide the knowledge and expertise to carry out this activity in a safe and effective manner.
Prescribed Control of Invasive Plant Species Selectively removing exotic and noxious plant species such as chinaberry, chinese tallow, ligustrum, and nandina to name a few. Plateau determines proper removal techniques and treatment areas for the highest effectiveness.
Wildlife Water Feature Construction, Gully Shaping, and Wetland Restoration Individually designed projects to fit your property's particular needs. Please call or email for a specific proposal.
Fire Ant Treatment Each year Plateau surveys and treats hundreds of acres of property for Imported Red Fire Ants. Armed with the latest aerial imagery, GPS units, and a highly effective dual action insecticide including Insect Growth Regulator to sterilize the queen, or organic Spinosad insecticide, our field technicians have the tools to fight back against this invasive pest.
Food Plots Plateau establishes annual and perennial forages in plots to provide supplemental nutrition to deer and quail in critical times. Plateau's staff of biologists has the knowledge necessary to choose the most suitable soils, and most effective blend of seeds.
Managing Tame Pasture, Old Fields, Croplands through Discing Lightly discing pastures in a random fashion can help break up the dominance of pasture grasses and encourage early successional forbs and wildflowers to re-establish in the disturbed areas and help reinvigorate your land.
Range Enhancement (Reseeding) Based on your goals, and your Wildlife Management Plan to help improve the diversity and volume of beneficial food sources for songbirds, quail, dove, turkey, and many other native species, Plateau reseeds appropriate designated areas with quality seed for native grasses and flowering plants.
Establishing Brush Piles This practice is a great value when done in conjunction with Brush Management. Plateau field technicians use cleared brush to construct brush piles, creating habitat for birds, reptiles, and mammals.
Half-Cutting Trees Plateau half-cuts small mesquite, huisache, or other suitable trees at about 3-4 feet high and lay the top half down to the ground to create living cover for small mammals and ground-dwelling birds. This is an excellent activity for mesquite or huisache-invaded fields as it creates instant protective cover for wildlife and helps protect more desirable plants from being eaten by deer and livestock. A perfect late winter or early-spring activity.
Hay Meadow, Pasture, and Cropland Management for Wildlife through Strip Mowing Mowing the right amount, in the correct patterns, at the best time of the year can be difficult for the untrained landowner. Plateau field technicians can carry out this activity to the greatest advantage for your wildlife needs.
Woody Plant/ Shrub Establishment Plateau establishes an effective mix of fruit, nectar, and seed producing shrubs and trees to provide ample cover, shelter and food for butterflies, quail, turkey, songbirds, small mammals and White-tailed deer.
Natural Cavity/Snag Development Standing, dead trees (snags) are an important component to any healthy woodland. They provide habitat for cavity-nesting songbirds, increase available food sources by encouraging insects, and serve as perch sites for raptors. Living trees on your property can be converted into snags by our experienced biologists and technician staff.
Spotlight Deer Counts Managing deer numbers is the key to producing the best quality deer and the best available habitat for other wildlife. A Spotlight Deer Count is a useful tool to help estimate White-tailed deer populations for the purposes of managing deer numbers through responsible hunting, as well as providing a demonstration to the Central Appraisal District that your deer harvest efforts are having the intended effect. It is essential that proper protocols are followed each year to generate useful numbers for determining harvest levels and meeting deer management goals.
Wintering and Resident Bird Survey Plateau offers surveys for landowners to identify wintering and resident birds on your property beginning November 1. This is a great opportunity to learn which birds are utilizing your property during the winter months. Additionally, you can use the information to identify important wintering habitats, track population trends, and create management plans for year-round use.
Breeding Bird Census These surveys are very popular and give you the opportunity to walk your land, accompanied by a skilled birdwatcher. This is a fantastic learning experience, not only with information about birds, but you can learn more about your land as well. Surveys are conducted March 15 through June 15. As always, they are conducted by a professional and highly trained birder. And, of course, you are invited and encouraged to participate!
Remote Camera Surveys A widely used and exciting tool for estimating deer numbers and population characteristics. Remote Camera Surveys are particularly well-suited to smaller properties or other properties where Spotlight Deer Counts do not fare as well. Our high-tech game cameras are placed at established feeding stations or bait sites where White-tailed deer congregate. After hundreds of photos are taken, our biologists analyze each and every one to determine population levels, buck age structure and quality, and harvest recommendations. A complete photo record of the deer and other wildlife that use the feed stations on your property are provided to you with the report. If you already own cameras, we can even analyze the photos you take following our survey protocol.
Annual Report Plateau prepares your Annual Report for your Central Appraisal District, detailing all the activities you have performed on your property in order to meet compliance. We can prepare the report even if you did all the activities on your own.
Updated Wildlife Management Plan If your property acreage, or legal ownership changes, an updated Wildlife Management Plan is required. If Plateau created your plan, there is typically a reduced rate for this as it will not be necessary to duplicate some of the steps involved in the initial process.
Site Monitoring Visit to Gather Information for Annual Report A site visit by one of our wildlife technicians can be used to monitor and effectively establish the activities performed on your property, and to collect all documentation necessary for your Annual Report.
Nest Box Monitoring Site Visit Each Spring, nest boxes are cleaned out of existing material so they are ready for the nesting season. In the Fall, a nest box monitoring site visits assesses the success of the nesting season and cleaning. Photographs and proper documentation are collected and, as possible, nest boxes repaired if damaged.
Consultation with the County Central Appraisal District - Plateau professionals represent you on any issues related to your Wildlife Management Valuation to the Central Appraisal District.
Consulting Site Visit Have one of Plateaus master-level biologists visit with you on your property to address your needs and your vision for your land. Learn more -- first hand and from an expert -- about your land, its unique ecological and habitat characteristics, and its potential. Discuss native grasses and wildflowers, and how to attract more turkey, dove, quail and songbirds. After the visit, Plateau can provide a comprehensive report addressing your concerns and aspirations to help you become a better steward of you land.
